Choosing an individual or language service provider
When you need translation or interpreting services, you can choose between an individual translator or interpreter and a language service provider (LSP).
1. Define your needs
- Identify the type of service you need—translation, interpreting, or both
- Specify the languages and dialects required
- Consider if you need someone with subject matter expertise
- Determine if the project is one-off or ongoing, and any deadlines

| Individual translators and interpreters provide direct communication and a personalised approach. They’re often cost-effective and flexible, especially for uncommon languages or smaller projects. | LSPs can handle larger projects involving multiple languages, such as conferences, events, or high-volume translation work. They may have access to more translation or interpreting technologies or tools. |
2. Check credentials and quality
Verify the translator or interpreter is certified by NAATI by using the ‘Check a NAATI Certification’ tool on this website. You can also ask if they are a member of a professional association like AUSIT, ASLITA or NZSTI. Always check their references.
For LSPs, make sure they work with NAATI-certified practitioners. If you have doubts, you can ask for the practitioner’s CPN to verify their certification on the NAATI website. Check online reviews and references. Ask about quality control processes and confirm their familiarity with relevant cultural details and terminology.
3. Compare costs and value
Get several quotes to compare pricing. For individuals, confirm there are no hidden fees like rush charges. For LSPs, consider the value of project management, quality assurance and technology support.
Need a certified translation of official documents?
If you need an official document, like a birth certificate or transcript, translated for use in Australia, the translation will generally need to be completed by a NAATI-certified translator. If you have chosen to engage an LSP, make sure to specify that a NAATI-certified translator must complete the translation.
Use the NAATI online directory to find the right professional for your needs.
